The Story
The World of Basil & North Villa
North Villa - A Gothic Musical is inspired by Wilkie Collins’s early novel Basil, a darkly compelling tale of love, obsession, and the hidden costs of social respectability.
At its heart is a young man of privilege whose rigid upbringing and romantic idealism draw him into a dangerous attachment—one that entangles him with a mysterious family, a beautiful but emotionally trapped woman, and a house that seems to guard its secrets fiercely. As passion collides with secrecy, the story moves from drawing rooms to shadows, from polite society to moral peril, revealing how desire, class, and power can quietly destroy lives.
On stage, the story is reimagined through music and heightened theatricality, leaning into what Collins himself called a “domestic Gothic”: an intimate world where repression, longing, and betrayal simmer beneath a respectable surface. The musical explores not only the plot of the novel, but its emotional undercurrents—how love curdles into obsession, how silence becomes complicity, and how the past refuses to stay buried.
Atmospheric, psychological, and deeply human, North Villa - A Gothic Musical invites the audience into a world where nothing is quite as it seems—and where the most dangerous secrets are kept close to home.
